• CNN reporters denied access: The White House denied two CNN journalists Thursday evening from covering Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s arrival at the White House for a state dinner, after trying to tell the network which type of journalists could cover the event. MS NOW journalists were also denied access.
• Passes reinstated: Earlier in the day, CNN along with MS NOW and Politico were allowed back into the White House after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to temporarily reinstate press badges for the news outlets.
• Judge’s order: The move came after the three outlets told federal Judge Timothy Kelly that their journalists were still denied entry in the morning despite his ruling. Overnight, Kelly ordered the Trump administration to temporarily reinstate their access after the outlets were banned from the premises last week by President Donald Trump.

When a reporter and producer tried to gain access to the event, a press wrangler barred them from entering and told them to “talk to” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung.
Yesterday evening, the White House solicited names for credentials to cover Xi’s arrival. CNN responded with names for a team that included a reporter, producer and camera crew, as is its standard coverage practice for White House events.
About an hour before Xi’s arrival was scheduled, the White House said CNN could cover the event but only with a photojournalist and audio technician, notably excluding the network’s editorial team consisting of a reporter and producer.
Other television networks were permitted to cover the greeting with reporters and producers. CNN told the White House that it wants to cover the event with an editorial presence.

Xi arrived at the White House around 10:00 a.m. CNN reporter Betsy Klein was not allowed back into the White House until around noon, after several attempts in the morning.
While access to the White House grounds has since been restored to badge-holders at CNN, MS Now and Politico, the issue of White House TV pool coverage is separate and unsettled. CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox News, which make up the TV pool, are waiting to receive confirmation from the White House that CNN will be allowed to fulfill its pool responsibilities in the future. ABC is pool today and networks are not covering events at the White House for pool until CNN’s status is confirmed.
A federal judge declined the request from media outlets that he hold an emergency hearing on the issues CNN, MS NOW and Politico were having accessing the White House Thursday morning.
