Hurricane Isaias to become a Category 3 soon with evacuations underway on Gulf Coast
• Record-shattering Isaias has strengthened into a strong Category 2 hurricane and could become a Category 3 “major hurricane” soon. Concern is growing for a stronger landfall on the northern Gulf Coast this evening.
• Widespread power outages are expected, and up to 7 feet of storm surge and up to 15 inches of rain is possible at the coast, with tornadoes popping up with little notice.
• States of emergency have been issued in parts of Alabama, Florida and Georgia, and mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for several coastal counties.
• Some Florida airports are scheduled to close ahead of the storm. Amtrak services in parts of Louisiana and Alabama are also disrupted.
